Program Studio Descriptions:
Readers/Writers Workshop + Book CLub
In our Readers/Writers Workshop, learners take the lead in their own learning journey. This learner-centered model empowers young authors and avid readers by giving them choices in what they read and write, fostering genuine passion and engagement.
The workshop is structured to include three key parts:
-
The Mini-Lesson: Each session begins with a short, focused lesson where the teacher introduces a specific reading or writing strategy, skill, or craft technique.
-
Independent Work Time: Learners then get to the real work of being authors and readers. They apply the skills from the mini-lesson to their own writing projects and read from books they have chosen themselves. During this time, the teacher acts as a coach, meeting with learners one-on-one and in small groups to provide personalized guidance and support.
-
Share Time: We end each session by coming together as a community. Learners have the opportunity to share their work, celebrate their progress, and learn from their peers in a supportive and encouraging environment.
-
Each month, learners will pick a set of books to read together, at the studio and at home, as part of their book club group based on their reading levels. On Wednesdays, learners will meet in their book club group and discuss elements of their chosen books.
This workshop model is designed to not only build essential literacy skills but also to cultivate a lifelong love for reading and writing. We teach the reader and the writer, not just the book or the assignment.
Entrepreneurial Studio + Math Skills Building
In the Entrepreneurial Studio, we believe that big ideas can come from anyone, at any age! This class empowers learners to transform their own unique ideas into real-world business plans. Learners will learn the entire entrepreneurial process, from brainstorming a concept based on their own life experiences to planning a business step-by-step.
This is a hands-on workshop where creativity meets practical skills. We’ll dive into key concepts like:
-
Financial Literacy: Learners will learn how to budget, price a product, and analyze costs.
-
Creative Problem-Solving: We teach leaerns to identify opportunities, innovate, and view failure as a valuable learning opportunity.
-
Leadership & Communication: Young entrepreneurs will develop skills in communication and team management as they prepare a final pitch for their business idea.
Our goal is to foster an entrepreneurial mindset by teaching learners how to apply their creativity and knowledge in a practical way. This studio is where young innovators learn to think big and discover the leaders within themselves.
Science Inquiry + STEAM
Prepare to ask big questions and find answers in our Science Inquiry + STEAM workshop! This class moves beyond traditional science lessons, blending hands-on investigation with creativity to tackle real-world challenges. Using a learning model called "anchored inquiry," learners will be presented with a compelling problem or phenomenon that anchors their learning and sparks their natural curiosity.
From there, it's all about exploration. Learners will work together, asking their own questions and conducting investigations to figure out scientific concepts for themselves. This isn't just a science class; it's a full STEAM experience. We integrate the Arts with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, recognizing that creativity is essential for innovation. By blending analytical thinking with creative expression, learners develop into more versatile problem-solvers.
In this class, learners will:
-
Engage in hands-on, inquiry-based projects driven by their own questions.
-
Take thoughtful risks and persist in solving complex problems.
-
Collaborate with peers to build a shared understanding of scientific ideas.
-
Use creative skills to visualize complex concepts and design innovative solutions.
This approach helps learners not only retain information more effectively but also develop higher-order thinking skills that are essential for becoming the leaders and innovators of the future.
Ecology and Nature
Have you ever wondered how every living thing on Earth is connected? In our Ecology and Nature class, young explorers will become "amateur ecologists" as they investigate the incredible web of life on our planet. We’ll journey through the world's diverse biomes, from vast deserts to lush rainforests, and discover the amazing plants and animals that call them home.
Learners will dive into key ecological concepts, including:
-
Food Chains & Food Webs: We'll untangle the flow of energy and see who eats whom in different ecosystems.
-
Life Cycles: Discover nature’s amazing recycling system, where nothing is ever wasted.
-
The Balance of Nature: Learn how ecosystems stay in harmony and how even small changes can have a big impact.
Through hands-on activities and investigations, learners will not only learn about the natural world but also understand humanity's impact on the planet's health. We’ll even look at how ecologists work to solve environmental mysteries and protect our world. This class is perfect for any child who loves nature and wants to understand their place within it.
Art Club
In the Art Club, a special feature of our Wednesday program, learnerss will unleash their creativity and explore the endless possibilities of art! This is a hands-on studio where children are encouraged to experiment with a diverse range of materials. They will have the opportunity to mold clay, bend wire, build with wood, and transform recycled objects into treasure. More than just a class, the Art Club is a space to develop problem-solving skills, express unique ideas, and discover the joy of the artistic process.
